Foods That Fight Discolouration & Pigmentation

Foods That Fight Discolouration & Pigmentation

When it comes to uneven pigmentation and discolouration of the skin it can be a struggle to achieve a flawless complexion.

Hyperpigmentation is normal but there are things you can do to achieve a more even skin tone. Even better, there are some foods which can achieve a more even skin tone as certain foods have been shown to have a protective effect on the skin which can help prevent unwanted changes in skin colouring and pigmentation.

So, if you struggle with discolouration in your skin, find out which pigment-fighting foods you should be adding to your shopping trolley.

Dark Green Veggies

If you’re not already packing dark greens into your lunch, now’s the time to start.

Dark green veggies such as spinach, kale, zucchini, broccoli, peas, and leafy-greens contain carotenoids which help filter UV radiation and reduce oxidative stress in the skin which means less discolouration.

So, regardless of your choice in greens, if you’re concerned about discolouration and pigmentation in your skin, you should be eating these veggies.

Citrus Fruits

Who doesn’t love some citrus fruits? Well now there’s another reason you should pick up that glass of OJ.

Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit and lemon are all packed with Vitamin C and Vitamin A which helps destroy free radicals in your body, assist with melanin production and can help to fight discolouration in your skin.

Fresh lemon juice could also be applied topically to your skin as a natural exfoliant to help remove discoloured skin cells and giving an overall brightening effect.

Tomato

Turns out tomatoes are good sources of lycopene, an antioxidant that protects against sun damage and may help prevent freckling and discolouration.

Although sunscreen should always be your first line of defence against sun-induced spots, you can’t go wrong with adding this fruit to your diet.

Salmon

If you love a salmon dinner, then you’re in luck!

Salmon is packed with healthy Omega 3 fatty acids which give your skin a healthy dose of moisture and helps reduce redness in the skin. Although it might not be the solution for all pigmentation issues it’s a great solution for those with acne scarring and inflammation.

Almonds

Like Salmon, nuts and seeds are packed with anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce in the skin. Almonds are especially good for your skin as they’re filled with magnesium, Omega 3 fatty acids, and Vitamin E, which help to reduce stress hormones that often cause breakouts meaning it’s also a great preventative measure for those with acne.

Yoghurt

Although when eaten yogurt doesn’t have as great of a result for skin pigmentation, applied topically this simple ingredient packs a punch. This is because Yogurt contains lactic acid which helps shed dead cells from the skin and overtime diminish discolouration and hyperpigmentation in the skin.

Boost your brightening efforts by applying plain, natural yogurt to your areas of concern and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off. Repeating this process as often as you’d use a face mask will help you see a difference in your skin.
